Gordon's Biscuit

Written and illustrated by Kerry Millard

New edition published by 40 South Publishers 2022

First published by Angus & Robertson in 1996, then by Penguin (Australia) in 2006.

After numerous requests from parents and children who shared it in their early years and who were trying to find it again, I have teamed up with Tasmanian publishers 40 South to create this joyful new edition. It has been wonderful stepping into this world again.

This is a story about friendship and community, with many little side stories going on in the illustrations. Inside the front and back covers you'll find clues to take you on a hunt through the book together.

Gordons Biscuit was read on ABC TVs Play School.

Gordon’s Biscuit

Written and illustrated by Kerry Millard

Published 2022 40 South Publishers

First published Angus & Robertson 1996, Penguin Group (Australia) 2006

Ella and Sam had a special place for eating biscuits. Almost nobody could find them there. Nobody except...

Gordon!

Ella and Sam loved Gordon.

Gordon had a very good nose. It was black and cold and shiny and could smell biscuits from three blocks away.

Gordon loved biscuits.

Gordon also loved the park!

But one day there was a new man at the park and there were new signs saying NO DOGS. Gordon was miserable.

Ella and Sam try to cheer Gordon up...but how?

There are lots of stories going on behind the scenes in the illustrations, and there are clues printed around the edges inside the front and back covers that will send you on a hunt through the book.

Gordon was based upon a sweet little scruffy dog I used to have called Meg, whose fur went all over the place and seemed to reflect her mood, just like Gordon’s. He has also inherited the wisps of fur on the end of her ears.

Teachers have been inventive getting their younger pupils to make biscuits, either real or made from various craft materials. Or giant hairy Gordons.

Other teachers have had their kids make their own crazy miniature parks.

One school I visited performed the book as a play, with different characters handing Sam and Ella a paper bag representing their contribution to the biscuit.

The newest edition is paperback, and republishing has provided the opportunity to make some subtle but satisfying changes and additions.

Quincy and Oscar

Quincy and Oscar

Written and illustrated by Kerry Millard

ABC Books 2006

Quincy and Oscar are friends.

In fact, Quincy and Oscar are best friends.

Quincy has a frisky tail, and Oscar is a boy who goes to school.

Quincy and Oscar have moved to a new neighbourhood and have discovered that nobody seems to need a new boy or a new dog.

Quincy is full of great ideas. One day he decides to go to school with Oscar. That way, all day, they can be with each other.

Through the warmth and fun of the relationship between the two friends, and with Quincy's whimsical approach to school, by the end of the day things are very different for everybody.

This book has been called heartwarming which is a joy to me.

It was written for bigger people to read to smaller people sitting on their lap, and for bigger little people to read for themselves. This book was written with preschool and early primary school children in mind, but I've also added lots of details in the drawings which will be fun for older children to find.

For example, the endpapers tell us something about this particular day at school. If you look carefully, you can work out which schoolbag belongs to whom.

Also, there are two little pink rubber boots (we call them gumboots in Australia) at the beginning, but only one at the end. Can you find what's happened to the other one?

There's a big picture of the town a little way into the book. I had fun creating a whole little community and have made the houses that different characters live in.

Can you work out where Hanayo lives? What about Miss Clover?

There's a little house with a red roof in the top lefthand corner- that's the house I grew up in. And you might be able to look in through a window in another building and find me drawing the pictures for the book (before my hair went grey).

My Sister has a Big Black Beard

My Sister has a Big Black Beard

My Sister Has a Big Black Beard & Other Quirky Verses by Duncan Ball was a fantastic book to illustrate. It's really exciting to see it turned into a covers-and-pages book after being scribbles on scraps of paper for a long time. They travelled with me around the world. I read the manuscript (what a book is called before it's tidied up and put together between covers) in Canada and France, and started to draw in Kent.

I love the thickness of it and the way the pages flip and flop. The first thing I do with a book usually is to riffle the pages, listen to them slap, and see what they smell like.

The verses are definitely QUIRKY, and being a BIG challenge to illustrate made it one of my FAVOURITE books to do. One page was SO scary that...well, you'll have to see for yourself.

And the cover is EMBOSSED which means the splatters of orange are lumpy! It's my first EMBOSSED book, but not my first book with lumps; I had a rabbit who made quite a few of my books lumpy nibbling them around the edges.
